Jon, Andrew and I hit up a random bar called Hook in a [normally crowded] Dunhua alley lined with cute cafes and not-so-cute bars…but the alley was of course, empty.
At not-quite 8pm, we were the only customers sitting in the basement (before two gals walked in for dinner ‘stead of just drinks). Our “fruit beer” tasted like cider and the cheesy Canto action film was mediocre at best, so we decided to buy Taiwan Beers from the 7-11 next door and drink in public while walking in the rain. Classic? No.
With beers still in hand, Jon and Andrew led me to their aunt’s to meet The Moms. Jon’s mom looked at me, stared at my beer, then looked at me again and started small talk regarding my major, the design firm downstairs (and their Johnnie Walker packaging), Taipei’s slowing economy—[interruption], “OH AMA, GUESS HOW MUCH JON’S JEANS WERE?!?” Thank God we all diverted our attention to Jon’s new jeans (and his blue-stained hands…and his Asian glow).
In the minds of Asian parents, we probably make a terrifying trio: a film producer, a journalism major, and a freelance designer makin’ art and music all day…with Taiwan Beers in hand. When you going to med school?!
“How you going to buy your next dSLR?!” might be more effective.
