A photographer’s self-consciousness
One thing I truly struggle with is, photographing strangers. I’ve asked chess players for permission before on Union Square in San Francisco, and I’ve been chased by a homeless man in Berkeley who asked me to delete the photos of his dog…from my film SLR (not possible). I’ve also walked around like a creep sneaking photos here and there while receiving all sorts of hand gestures, particularly in Asia. It’s not always…fun. Yet the best photos are candid ones of strangers with stories to tell…stories they might not want me to share with others, but stories I find intriguing, heart-wrenching, or beautiful and worthy of capturing. What can you do?
The above is a photo of me on NYC’s subway, shooting grumpy-looking strangers. conspicuous to the max, yo.
