  2. Design is a way of life, a point of view. It involves the whole complex of visual communications: talent, creative ability, manual skill, and technical knowledge. Aesthetics and economics, technology and psychology are intrinsically related to the process.

    — In 1998, Steven Heller and the School of Visual Arts published Paul Rand: A Designer’s Words, a fantastic collection of Rand quotes, printed by Rand’s favorite printer, Mossberg & Co., typeset by his favorite typesetters, PDR, and produced with his favorite paper, Mohawk Superfine. Only 500 copies were produced and they are now a collector’s item. Today, the gem of a volume becomes available as a free PDF online.   (via)

As the industry continues to ponder the future of publishing, Mike Matas (who helped develop the iPhone and iPad UI at Apple) demos a promising next-generation digital book at TED, the first full-length interactive book for iPad.

  4. Speaking of the cover, in the next few weeks I’m going to have preliminary conversations with our design team about the cover design. I’d like to hear any thoughts you might have as well. We have fantastic designers here so I’m sure we’ll have some great ideas but I always like to pass along thoughts from the authors as well. Feel free to send me examples of similar titles whose covers you like, thoughts on illustration versus all text, etc.
