As the industry continues to ponder the future of publishing, Mike Matas (who helped develop the iPhone and iPad UI at Apple) demos a promising next-generation digital book at TED, the first full-length interactive book for iPad.

Recently PC Authority got to spend some time with one of Intel’s prototypes, the Intelligent Home Energy Management proof of concept device. This is a small box with a gorgeous 11.56in OLED touchscreen that is designed to act as a dashboard for monitoring energy use in the home. It is powered by an Intel Atom processor, and runs embedded Linux to interface with devices via either Wi-Fi or a wireless mesh networking technology called ZigBee.
As good as this is I can’t help thinking that it would be better as an iPad app.
I saw this demo’d at Intel! :)

“Infographic of the Day: The iPad Competes With Just About Everyone”
(first discovered via Fast Company, designed by Section Design for Courier Japon) -
AirXY: From Immaterial to Rematerial combines real time visualization, sensors, light and sound. Large-scale screen and floor projections confront and engage visitors passing through the massive space. The screen is a clock and responsive real time capture of the presence of visitors while the floor projection gradually reveals a fleeting, ethereal architecture.

Whuffie Meter: Curious about the future of social networking? Whuffie is a conceptual social Metric based on what others think of you. In the future this Metric might actually be usable as real money. Why not? Celebrities are used to getting things for free based on their popularity. This is the same idea taken to its democratic extreme. Socializing will take on completely new dimensions when we can see everything public about a person right as we are talking with them. Think dating is difficult today? Imagine the hoops we’ll have to jump through when everyone in the bar can see your complete dating history the minute you walk into the room. The term “whuffie,” by the way, is a word coined by author Cory Doctorow in his book Down And Out In the Magic Kingdom. It refers to the measurement of respect or karma a person gains or looses in their lives. In Doctorow’s future, humans have implants in their brains that visually project their whuffie, which has replaced money as currency.

The Bui Brothers are testing a pair of Olympus PEN E-P2 cameras. (It’s the camera around Lan’s neck here.) They’re micro four-thirds and um, AMAZING. I stole these photos of our lunch with Intel from their whrrlstream, check out that link for lots and lots more pretty pictures.
I love the vintage look of the cameras, they remind me of my old Pentax K1000! Gah, I have immense gadget lust. =/
said I’d never buy a point-n-shoot but the PEN E-P2 is pretty much a pseudo-dSLR but fucking cute. gah!!!!!!!!!!! it’s soooo expensive though :(
anyway, so envious of all you ppl at SxSW :)

Gadgets have swept the world before, but mobile computing devices are different. Through applications and upgrades, they can acquire new powers. Apple alone offers more than 100,000 apps and has delivered more than 2 billion downloads. Phones are becoming maps, TVs, libraries, shopping tools, video cameras, car keys, and credit cards.
In more and more places, machines are running the world. On stock exchanges, high-speed computers armed with trading algorithms and superior pattern recognition are thrashing human competitors. Airline autopilots have become so reliable that human pilots can check out. In cars, software is beginning to assume responsibility for steering, braking, and parking. Drones are patrolling our borders, catching humans who try to sneak in. Computers are telling child-welfare agencies whether to take kids away from parents. Programs are running “virtual call centers,” measuring the output of dispersed salespeople and routing customer phone calls to the best performers. Computers don’t just work for us anymore. We work for them.—

PACKET phone
Packet is the winner of Istanbul Design Week 2007 where it won the first place for this concept phone. It is a cell phone concept that measures 5 cm x 5 cm, about half cigarette package when folded and when opened it reveals 5 surfaces with the keypad, display, 2 mini keyboards with letters, and the center face with touch-sensitive button areas.
In fact, the entire cell phone is made of a material similar with the e-paper and is touch-sensitive. On the back it shows the time in large character format. Packet is extremely thin and lightweight, easy portable and would probably be made of eco-friendly materials
